Zion is perhaps one of the most important names in the Bible. It is not just a geographical site. Zion is more a prophetic name for Israel, Jerusalem, and the connection of God to both. The name appears 161 times in the Old Testament and seven times in the New Testament. One of the seven ‒ the most important of all ‒ contains an unfortunate misquotation in most English Bible versions. For example, in the New Testament both the NIV and King James version quote the Old Testament as saying that the redeemer will come from Zion, whereas the related OT verse says it the other way around:

“And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: ‘The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob’

Romans 11:26 NIV

The original says:

“‘And a redeemer shall come to Zion, and to those in Jacob who turn from transgression,’ says the Lord”

Isaiah 59:20

A small twist that should have been avoided!

Zion is mentioned as the source of morality for the world in the form of the Torah:

“And many nations shall come, and say, ‘Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths’; for Torah shall go forth from Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem”

Micah 4:2

Zion is the place from where the voice of God is calling:

“And he said: ‘The Lord will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem'”

Amos 1:2

Zion is the place for Israel’s salvation:

“I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not delay; and I will place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory”

Isaiah 46:13

And last but not least, Zion is part of the name, FRIENDS OF ZION, chosen by Michael Evans for the organization that vows to do what God is calling for: helping Israel at times of distress. May the LORD greatly bless this ministry that places our holiest name on the top of its standards. B’ru•chim ti•hi•yu – Be blessed, all of you who bless Zion!
