Michael is one of four major angels that, according to Jewish tradition, is standing around the heavenly throne (where God sits) and, besides serving God, is in charge of watching the four corners of the world. Michael is an archangel. An archangel (from Greek) is an angel of high rank. The meaning of Mi•cha•el in Hebrew is “who is like God?”
The Bible does not specify all of the other angels by name except for Mi•cha•el and Gabriel. Mi•cha•el is mentioned in the Book of Daniel three times.
“But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty one days; but, behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia”
“But I will tell you that which is inscribed in the book of truth; and there is none who stands fast with me against these, except Michael your prince”
The last reference in the Bible to this chief angel is:
“And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince who has charge of your people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time; but at that time your people shall be saved, every one whose name shall be found written in the book”
In the New Testament, Mi•cha•el also has two references:
“But Michael, the archangel, when contending with the devil and arguing about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him an abusive condemnation, but said, ‘May the Lord rebuke you!'”
The second time is in Revelation:
“There was war in the sky. Michael and his angels made war on the dragon. The dragon and his angels made war”
The other three great angels are Gavri’el; Gabriel (God is my strength); Auriel/Oriel (God is my light); and Raphael (God has healed) is the fourth major angel. Raphael performs all manners of healing.
