Re•pha•el is one of four major angels that, according to Jewish tradition, is standing around the heavenly throne (where God sits) and, besides serving God, is in charge of watching the four corners of the world.
According to Jewish tradition, Re•pha•el is the angel who is in charge of healing. His name means “God has healed.”
Re•pha•el is considered one of the four Cherubim who has ‘the face of a man.’
“And everyone had four faces; the first face was the face of a Cherub, and the second face was the face of a man, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle”’
According to the sages, Re•pha•el was one of the three angels who visited Abraham, and he is the angel who healed Abraham after his circumcision.
Christian traditions also view Re•pha•el as the angel who healed Abraham. However, the main mission of Re•pha•el, according to these Christian traditions, is to protect travellers during their journeys.
The other three great angels are Michael (Archangel), whose name means “who is like God?; Gavri’el, Gabriel (God is my strength); and Auriel/Oriel (God is my light).
