Our subject today is the symbolic jewel, ‘ta•ba•at nisuin’ the wedding ring, by which the marriage is sanctified.

The act of putting this ring is very significant in Judaism and it said with a special blessing: ‘Behold, you are consecrated to me with this ring according to the law of Moses and Israel’. The groom places the ring on the bride’s right index finger. According to traditional Jewish law, two valid witnesses must see him place the ring. The act of putting the ring on a woman’s finger and saying this blessing is so abiding that movies that show weddings skip altogether this part because if it is done in the presence of two witnesses it becomes a valid marriage despite its theatrical intentions. If this happens even as a joke, undoing it requires a complete court’s divorce process.
