U•ri•el is one of four major angels that, according to Jewish tradition, is standing around the heavenly throne (where God sits) and, besides serving God, is in charge of watching the four corners of the world.
The meaning of the name U•ri•el is ‘God is my light.’
According to Jewish traditions, U•ri•el is in charge of the light in the world. ‘Or’ or ‘Ur’ means ‘light’ in Hebrew.
According to some Christian traditions, U•ri•el was the angel that wrestled with Jacob (look for our previous Hebrew Word of the Day titled “Israel” for some amazing facts about Israel that will, without a doubt, surprise you). According to these traditions, Uriel was also the same angel who notified Noah about the upcoming flood.
The other three great angels are Michael (Archangel), whose name means “who is like God?”; Gavri’el, Gabriel (God is my strength); and Raphael (God has healed) is the fourth major angel. Raphael performs all manners of healing.
