We’ve been receiving requests to introduce some simple words and expressions that are essential for day-to-day conversation. To meet these requests, we include from time to time the most useful common words of interpersonal communication. Because these words are simple, and to make this series more effective, we’ll present 2-3 words per day instead of the regular pace of one a day. You’ll need a little more time for practice but you’ll build up your useful vocabulary much sooner. If you are in contact with Hebrew speakers, why not start today and surprise them with a small representation from their own tongue…
The first meaning of yo•fi, when used as a noun, simply means ‘beauty.’ This is a biblical word that is used the same way today. The word beauty connects to us emotionally and you just can’t remain indifferent when you read these powerful biblical verses:
“Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth”
“All who pass by clap their hands at you; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call the perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth?”
The second meaning of yo•fi is a very soft and very acceptable slang expression which is a call of excitement and approval. It may means: wonderful! great! Okay! excellent! well done!, great job!, bravo!, etc. You can use this word freely when speaking. We all do love to use it, and even more to hear it as a comment about something we did or said…
Yofi!
